Showcasing the distinctive seafood and fisherman’s cuisine of Tsushima, the owner’s birthplace
The owner, Mr. Asahi, hails from Tsushima Island in Nagasaki Prefecture. Growing up watching his fisherman father and ama (sea diver) mother, he learned to handle fish and shellfish from a young age.
He visits Kyoto’s Central Market almost daily, often purchasing seafood shipped directly from Tsushima – such as tilefish, yellowtail, and swordtip squid – through trusted wholesalers he relies on. Mr. Asahi expertly uses the entire fish, purchasing them whole and ensuring nothing goes to waste.
The menu is packed with daily and monthly fish specials. A unique offering here is authentic ryōshi ryōri (fisherman’s cuisine), featuring dishes like salt-grilled fish heads and the flavorful meat around the bones (ara) – preparations characteristic of fishing communities. You’ll also find delightful options like the luxurious three-kind sashimi platter (¥2280), which might include pufferfish (fugu), fatty tuna (toro), and sea urchin (uni). Because the fish is prepared in-house, these high-quality offerings are remarkably affordable. Don’t overlook the sake selection, either, which focuses on connoisseur favorites like genshu (undiluted) and namazake (unpasteurized) varieties
Inside, you’ll find menus for recommended sake hanging everywhere. Choose from 15-20 seasonal varieties sourced from breweries across Japan.
